Fan-Fiction “The Misapprehension of Bella Swan”

authorJen | February 11, 2010

I’m extremely saddened to say that this will be our last Twilight Tuesday fan-fiction recommendation and I just wanted to say that Donna and I have had so much fun this last year bringing you our favorite fan-fiction stories and discussing them on the forums. I will miss this a great deal and I thank each and everyone of you for reading and discussing.

Now onto our last recommendation.

The Misapprehension of Bella Swan

by HunterHunting

Jen’s thoughts:

The story we are reviewing this week is a brand new story by our favorite fan-fiction author, HunterHunting. As she has shown with Clipped Wings and Inked Armor she is a master of the angstily written word and a magical story teller, has a HUGE potty mouth and writes a lemon like no other author around. And now this goddess of fan-fiction brings us a new genre of story – satire in the form of a sarcastic Bella and buff hockey playing Edward… I’m now certain heaven does exist in the form of this story.

The Misapprehension of Bella Swan starts off with Bella being dragged to an NHL arena to watch her step-brother Emmett play. At said hockey game she meets none other than the green eyed boy wonder of hockey, Edward. In just two chapters HH has you wrapped around her finger and dying to read more.

Here’s what I know so far… Bella has a tongue that will give you whiplash and Edward has a baaaaddddd reputation and the two are drawn together like moths to a flame. Do you really need to know more? This is a must, sit by your email every Wednesday until your email updates that HH has updated kind of story.

Donna’s thoughts:

Of course, you all know that Clipped Wings is one of my absolute FF of all time and you may well know that HH has nearly finished her epic journey of Tatward and his Kitten…. So I was sort of starting to panic a bit at the thought of not having my fix every week (cause HH is that good!!  She updates EVERY week). And to say I was ecstatic when I heard she was starting another story is the understatement of the century! I actually think I might have scared the kids a bit when I was doing my very loud happy dance!

So, even though HH has only two chapters up of MoBS…I begged Jen…Ok, told her we were doing this story for our last review together!  Basically you have your sassy and really wordy Bella and the very gorgeous Hockeyward and they have just met and hit if off…so to speak, but as Jen has said HH has this way of drawing you in and keeping you wanting more… and I am already hooked!!

Do yourself a favour and give this FF a go…Or why not let HH get a few more chapters of MoBS under her belt and start on Clipped Wings….Again!!

Parting words: as this wraps up our last fan-fiction I’d like to invite you to join our Twilight Good Read C2 on fan-fiction.net to continue to receive story recommendations as we read new and recommendable fics.

Fan-Fiction Hit By Destiny

authorJen | January 28, 2010

Hi all! I hope everyone is having a fantastic Thursday. I’m flying solo today with my review, Donna just wrapped up sending the boys back to school after summer holiday and will be back next week. :D

This week’s recommendation is an interesting one and a little edgier and darker than most of my fan-fic recommendations BUT there is something about it that I could not pull myself away from so without further wait:

Hit By Destiny

by:  OCDMess

Here’s the premise: Edward is a jerk. He’s the not so misunderstood high-school badboy that everyone girl wants and every guy wants to be. He doesn’t play by anyone’s rules but his own. Bella is the school freak with a dark past. She makes it through each day being picked on and ridiculed by her peers all the while dealing with a family situation that makes her high school day look like a cake walk. Needless to say Edward and Bella aren’t friends and they don’t like each other. One very fateful day Edward hits Bella with his car as he hits a sheet of black ice. The story that unfolds after that is riveting.

I have never read a more intriguing story with such a quality jerkface Edward before. That’s right I said jerkface. It’s really not what I wanted to say but I’m trying to keep this PG. And even with that… I could not stop reading. There is something that pulls you to desperately want him to be good and Bella to over come her struggles.

This story is actively updated and currently 23 chapters long. I’m very interested to get the opinion of any one that reads it so please drop me a line here or over on the forums! If you are looking for more things to read be sure to join our Fan-Fiction.net C2 for updates on new stories (and quite an archive of old ones).

fan-fiction… marble and mahogany by letmesign

authorJen | December 31, 2009

The standard disclaimer: If you have’t read Twilight “WHY NOT??? If you haven’t finished the series then skip this chatter because we might spoil something for you and we definitely don’t want to do that.

This Week’s Story:

Marble and Mahogany by letmesign

The Premise:

Bella is broken and unstable, trying desperately to start her own life after leaving her creator. Edward feels doomed to an eternity of wandering alone and finds himself hoping to find a mate for the first time in his existence. AU–some dark themes. ~letmesign

The Verdict:

(Donna’s off today recovering from her long night out for New Year’s Eve downunder so I’m flying solo today.)

This has got to be one of the best all vampire stories I’ve ever read. Letmesign does a wonderful job of pulling your right into the characters and wanting to know more.

The story begins with Alice doing what she does best… keeping secrets from a whiny and pensive Edward. He knows she’s keeping something big from him. The family has settled in Seattle and the ‘kids’ are attending Washington University and Edward is still alone. How will he react when he meets another vampire who sparks feelings he thought he was destined to never feel?

Letmesign does brilliant job weaving an action packed and BOLD tale of need, want, deception and fate. This is by far one of the gustiest all vampire stories I’ve ever read in terms of plot… and it delivers.

I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year’s Eve and New Years Day!!! What are your plans for tonight? And if you already celebrated… how did you celebrate?

fan-fiction… Burn and Shine by pulsepoint

authorJen | December 10, 2009

So, like I always say:

The standard disclaimer: If you haven’t read Twilight WHY NOT??? If you haven’t finished the series then skip this chatter because we might spoil something for you and we definitely don’t want to do that.

This Week’s Story:

Burn and Shine by pulsepoint

The Premise:

At first glance felonious Edward seems like nothing but trouble, but as sheltered college student Bella digs deeper she realizes he is so much more. Possibly too much for her to handle. ExB, AH, rated M for dark/adult themes and profanity. ~ Pulsepoint

Jen’s Thoughts:

At first I was first drawn to this story by the premise. I have for some time now been drawn to stories with a darker Edward character. The complexity of a dark Edward is interesting to read. This story definitely does not disappoint. But what really drew me in was the first chapter. Bella goes on a tirade about overly used literary terms that had me nearly rolling on the floor with her dry sarcasm. She definitely had with the sarcasm.

As I continued to read I found that I was really drawn to see how Edward’s character played out. He’s not only dark but emotionally broken and while I do find that quite difficult to read he’s dark is also peppered with humor and again my favorite sarcasm so I was compelled to read on.

In this fic Bella is quite interesting to read as well and her character really drew me in. What will she do when the bad boy that she knows she shouldn’t be attracted to won’t leave her head? And even worse what is she going to do when Alice’s relationship with his best friend keeps throwing them together.

This one isn’t finished yet but it’s a must read!

Donna’s Thoughts:

I have been reading Fan Fiction for about a year and a half now and in that time I have grown to love nearly every kind of incarnation that Edward has become.
He has been romantic, passionate, bad, homeless, angsty just to name a few….But, when I come across a seriously damaged and broken Edward my heart breaks for him and I kinda find it hard to continue reading, and this too would be the case if it wasn’t for the amazing witty, wonderfully written and brilliant story that Pulsepoint has given us….
We start Burn and Shine believing that Edward is just your typical bad boy out looking for a bit of fun and cruising through life. But, as we go deeper there is so much more to him than a tough attitude and explosive temper. And surprisingly from the very first sentence I was actually captivated by Bella’s POV ( which for me, is rare, I kinda like EPOV best in FF) who, of course finds herself undeniably attracted to this guy who one minute is rescuing her from an ex-boyfriend to the next who is then going out of his way to insult her.  Throw into the mix a best friend who would do anything to protect him, and a very firery Rose who is dripping wth quick wit and a ever present sarcasm and you have the makings of one of the best stories I have read in a very long time.
Pulsepoint hasn’t finished this superb piece of drama just yet. I for one am hanging out for the next chapter and can’t wait to see where she is going to take us on this journey….I totally recommmed you give this one a go. Not only will you enjoy these very likable and appealing charaters you just might end up like me, and have a sore bottom from not moving for 2 hours cause I just had to finish it!!

Read it and let us know what you think. :D

FanFic Recommendation: The Fan by Pear13

authorJen | December 3, 2009

The standard disclaimer: If you haven’t read Twilight – GO READ IT!!! If you haven’t finished the series then skip this chatter because we might spoil something for you and we definitely don’t want to do that.

This Week’s Story:

The Fan by Pears13

The Premise:

Cubs playboy, Edward Masen, is leery of getting close to women, especially fans. When he is set up on a blind date with Bella Swan, a huge baseball fan, will the attraction be enough to break through Edward’s wall? AU/AH Canon pairings. M for sexual sit. ~Pears13

Jen’s Thoughts:

We did a little switcheroo this week. Our first story that we started with didn’t pan out quite like we thought and while we aren’t opposed to doing a review of something we didn’t love, we didn’t love this first one enough to finish so we sort of switched horses mid-stream so our neither of us have had a chance to finish this story BUT I can say with utmost certainty you WON’T be disappointed, lol.

Now I’m going to let Donna go first because she’s written a great description of the story…

Donna’s thoughts:

Ok, I admit it!!  I have only read 5 chapters of The Fan by Pears13 (I only started today)…. but WOW! Right from the very first paragraph this fanfic has you stealing bases, hitting home runs and sliding into home…

Edward Masen is the All Star short stop of the Chicago Cubs. Yes that’s right, not only is he gorgeous with a mess of dark auburn hair, infectious smile and used to having women flock to him…He is a baseball star!…. When this story starts we find Edward not interested in any long term serious relationship, been there, done that and got hurt… Until he finds his match in a beautiful brunette of the name of Bella Swan…Baseball stat extraordinaire, season ticket holder, ungraceful dancer and NOT Edward Masen’s biggest fan…

Unintended sparks fly during a chance meeting where Edward swoops in and saves the day when Bella receives some unwanted advances. Is her knowledge of the GAME enough to stop this playboy Edward?

So far…And as I said, I have only read 5 chapters… but so far, there are some amazing plot lines developing. And already I can see that it is full of all the good things we love, a little bit of fluff, angst and some evil characters we all love to hate. All of our favourite Twilight characters have made an appearance and I have to say this fic has one of the best Non-Canon character descriptions. They are all lovable, endearing and perfect for the plots in this story…. Well from what I have read anyway….

Ummmmmm…. Now I have to get back to those raspberry flavoured kisses, tight baseball uniforms and smoldering green orbs……

Jen’s Thoughts: (again)

Hmmmm…. Edward as a Cubs player. That’s a thought I can go with. Now I’m not generally a baseball fan only because our local team is so terrible they are practically a farm team for other major league teams BUT if I had a team to watch I might be persuaded to watch a Chicago team if this Edward, Jazz and Carlisle were playing for them, lol.

Edward’s a cocky baseball player with a bit of a womanizing past with a bit of a stereotype on his shoulder of what a fan-girl might be and he wants NO part of them. Bella is a research analyst who loves facts, information and baseball. Needless to say she knows her stuff and she knows Edward, or at least what the facts available to her tell her about Edward. After a chance meeting sparks fly and the two have definite chemistry but their jobs and or fan-girl status get in the way. Bella doesn’t trust a ball player farther that she can throw one and Edward’s reputation precedes him. Edwards wouldn’t touch a fan-girl with a ten foot pole but what will they do when they slowly start creeping into each others heads constantly and get thrown together by Jasper and Alice’s budding relationship? And what if Edward’s past comes back with some pretty big teeth?

This story is AWESOME! Like Donna said it has everything. And the plot is well thought out, well developed and the character development is very good. You won’t be disappointed by this one!! Now go get yourself some raspberry gum, some coffee and a stadium blanket and settle in cause you aren’t going to want to leave this one once you start.

Be sure to leave Pear13 some love if you read it and join us over at the forums to discuss. :D
