book talk: forever

authorJen | May 28, 2009

Oh my. It’s the first day of summer break and my brain has checked out. I do greatly apologize for this being so late.

Spoiler Warning: This book club discussion question reveals important details about Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Please finish the book before reading on.

This weeks questions is simple on the surface but I think there is some underlying discussion that could be quite interesting. As we all know vampires in Meyerville are immortal. In Twilight the immortality of the vampires takes a backseat to the discussion of their diet but it does get me thinking.

Would it appeal to you to live forever? Why or why not?

Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Book discussion: Gone

authorJen | May 21, 2009

Spoiler Warning: This book club discussion question reveals important details about New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. Finish the book before reading on.

Last week we spent some time discussing the dynamic between Jacob and the Cullens and that got me thinking about Edward’s departure in New Moon, so this week I want to get your thoughts on Edward’s reasoning for leaving.

Do you agree or disagree with Edward’s choice in leaving? Do you see any good that comes out of Edward leaving?

Do you agree or disagree with Edward’s choice in leaving? The first time I read New Moon it was excruciating. It was by far my least favorite in the series of 3, at the time. Edward’s leaving was brutal. I felt betrayed by the author, the characters, the story line, all of it. Edward’s lie hit me hard. Stephenie Meyer had done a brilliant job building the allure and the beauty of Edward and it was easy to identify with Bella’s insecurities when he left.

In rereading the book I better understood Edward’s character because I had read all the way through Eclipse. I better understood his tortured self loathing. But I still thought his choice to leave was wrong. It was selfish and it really showed an unbelievable lack of trust in Bella’s decision making ability and I thought it was cowardly.  It takes a much bigger person to allow your beloved to make their own decisions than it does to make the choice for them. He let his own insecurities make his choices and and hers. I feel that’s wrong.

I do need to say thought that on the second read through I adored New Moon. I slowed down and read it for what it was and it was MUCH better to me. Now it is nearly my favorite of the series.

Do I see any good coming out of Edward leaving? YES. It forced him to start to see how destructive his constant need to control everything is. He made a mistake and it was a huge one. He became fallible. This made him more human to me as a reader and to Bella.

And not to mention it made for one heck of an awesome make up scene in Volterra.

Book Talk: Jacob and the blood suckers

authorJen | May 14, 2009

Spoiler Warning: This book club discussion question reveals important details about New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. Finish the book before reading on.

This week I thought we could delve into the psyche of Jacob. I personally love this character. He’s very complex. I know he doesn’t garner a lot of love from some people but I have to say I wouldn’t mind having him for a best friend.

So here is this weeks question:

Do you think Jacob’s hatred of Edward and the Cullens as vampires is justified, considering they don’t hunt or hurt people?

Book Talk Thursday – James

authorJen | March 19, 2009

***Spoilers will be included in this question – if you haven’t read the entire book proceed with caution.***

In Twilight the book takes a dramatic turn half way through the book. In the beginning Edward’s blood lust appears to be the villain but soon the character of James is introduced. How do you feel about James as a character? Is he effective as a villain? Is he a realistic antagonist vampire? He seems to be the ultimate bad boy – especially as portrayed in the movie. Do you agree? Outside of Twilight who is your favorite villain? Why?

Cam Gigandet, James in Twilight
