Book Talk: Fan Fiction Part Deux

Spoiler Warning: This book club discussion question reveals important details about Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Please finish the books before reading on.

Second disclaimer: All three of these stories below are rated M and are not intended for anyone under 18 to read.

Now that those are out of the way, lets get this discussion going.

Last week for our book talk we got some discussion going surrounding fan-fiction. One of the comments made me realize I jumped the gun a little bit. What is fan-fiction? Well. It’s addicting, first off. Don’t come back to me crying about your lack of sleep like I didn’t warn you.  Second, it’s stories written by amateur authors using the characters, general canon (though not usually plot) and universe of any published work (fiction, movies, television, etc.).

There are MANY sites that provide a hosting place for fan-fiction. Here are just a few:

  • FanFiction.net – definitely the most notable and largest of the fan-fiction sites.
  • Live Journal – Live Journal offers an interesting solution to fan-fiction through a blog type platform.
  • Twilighted – dedicated to Twilight only fan-fiction. This particular site is heavily screened in the submission process, you aren’t likely to find the really poorly written stuff here.
  • Ramblings and Thoughts – another site dedicated to only Twilight Fan-Fic, also heavily screened.
  • Twilight Archives – ditto.

Last week I also focused my recommendations on primarily all human, out of canon fan-fics. This week I thought I would recommend a few that give us the vampire fix we love and stay faithful to the story line and characters Stephenie gave us.

First up is The Road Less Traveled and it’s sequel The Road Not Taken by Daintress. These are two of the first fan-fics I read way back two years ago when I started reading fan fiction. They are a continuation of the series after Eclipse. At the time these were written Breaking Dawn was nothing more than an outline on Stephenie Meyer’s desk. It’s an interesting twist on the plot and in some ways I wish Breaking Dawn was a little more like this story. Let’s just say it doesn’t ‘jump the shark’ quite the way Breaking Dawn does.

Second is a story that might not be for everyone but I dearly love this story. It’s Dear Diary by Alice Laughed. This is the story of Claire as she goes up as told by her Diary entries. What is it like being imprinted on at 2 years old?

These last two are a fun collection of storied involving the Denali girls and Bella. Fair Game and Overnighter by Eowynn77. What if Bella had surprise ‘babysitters’ when Edward when to hunt one weekend? (I really like this writer… she does an amazing job of staying in canon but putting a unique twist on her stories.)

Do you have any “in canon” fan fiction favorites?

P.S. If you are interested we have a community set up on Fanfiction.net that we update periodically with new fics that we have read and enjoyed. If you’d be interested in joining you can go to Fanfiction.net and create an account then follow this link and subscribe. When we add new fics you’ll receive an email letting you know one has been added. And if you haven’t joined the forums please do! We have lots of good discussion going on over there about many of these good reads!

LOL! That would be me… total newbie to fan fiction and now completely addicted. Took me 3 nights to get to Chap.45 in Wide Awake. What can I say? It’s good stuff. So now I’m going to focus on The Road Less Traveled. SO glad I joined this site… I love you girls! So much inspiration! xx

I have only began really reading fanfic within the last month. I admit, I was a fanfic snob. I just was so in love with the actual saga, I couldn’t imagine any writer coming CLOSE to making me love any other version of the characters as much as I love Stephenie’s. That changed after I read Wide Awake. I then read Scotch, Gin, and the New Girl and loved it. I have yet to read any of these that you posted, but will be bookmarking them and doing so.
