Book Talk: Gifts

Alrighty folks it’s that time again. It’s time to talk Twilight the book and you’ll have to forgive me because I sort of have Robsten on the brain after all this MTV Movie Awards drama… are they, aren’t they, are they, what’s the deal with Oregano, I mean Angarano, and what divine secrets can you really tell by the way someone exits a car? Any how. Here’s the standard disclaimer…

Spoiler Warning: This book club discussion question reveals important details about Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Please finish the books before reading on.

Please excuse my digression above, here’s your question:

What vampire power (mind reading, etc…) would you like to have and why?

This ought to be a fun one. So what are your thoughts? You know I’m going to give you a long winded answer. You’ll find it under the more link…

Well. This is a toughy. I know for certain I don’t want Edward’s power. As Uncle Ben said in Spider Man, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Definitely too much angst to be had with that one. I mean look at this brooding mug…

Brooding Edward Cullen

Alice’s power is a little more appealing but I do love a good surprise and that would be off limits as a ’seer’.

Jasper’s power is interesting but I’d have to say that Uncle Ben’s all knowing wisdom would apply here too, though there is some fan-fiction out there that makes this power sound awfully appealing. :D

And I’m not even going to touch the powers of the Denali girls, nuh-uh. ;) As much fun as that might be I’ve got to much Bella in me to even entertain the idea of being a succubus. Wow, I just said that on the interwebz.

I think for me I’d really want something more subtle… I’m not anything if not a behind the scenes girl. With the exception of my occasional post I hide behind my code, my drawings, my creations and let them to the talking. I want the focus off of me as much as possible. I would probably really fit well with something like Bella’s eventual power that has a distinct on and off and something that lets me protect when necessary but isn’t flashy. As I think this out I really do have to say that Bella’s shielding gift would be perfect for me… read that to say I could hide from my kids and students on occasion ;) .

So… What vampire power (mind reading, etc…) would you like to have and why?

I think my vampire power choice would have to be…something more like Carlisle compasion and great ability to heal. But if that doesn’t count having Jasper’s ability would be perfect for me. I already have an uncany gift to calm anyone around me down. Although I do it cause I can talk almost anyone into believing what I want them to cause I am a really good talker lol. I feel already being able to do that and knowing the power I guess that can hold it is the power for me. But my first choice would be more leaning at Carlisle’s compassion and ability to just smell when blood is clean and heal humans although they are my main food source technically that to me in itself is a strong and forgiving gift to have.

This is a tough one. I really love Jasper’s ability because I already try to use my energy to pump people up, but with this ability they have to oblige and can only be annoyed after the fact…and then I can alter that emotion too :) The only down side to Jasper’s is how emotions affect him, so I don’t know if I could deal with that.
I also have to say that Jane’s ability has it’s up side too. I know she uses it sadistacally, but really it would be great self-defense. I do have to say that I might have a little too much fun with that power against some co-workers, so maybe that isn’t the safest one to give me. :)
I agree with Jen about the great responsibility part. I think Stephenie did a great job of shaping each character so that the power really worked with the personality. I also agree that I would never want Edward’s power. Particially because I like the golden rule, and I don’t want anyone reading my thoughts, so I wouldn’t want to intrude and read someone else’s.

I think I want Siobhan’s power..doesn’t she have the power of wishful thinking? She can just will things to happen? The Irish clan leader chick…

I think I would love to see the future like Alice does. It gives you an idea of what to prepare for and how peoples minds are working based on the decisions they make to direct their lives.

  • By Angie, June 4, 2009 @ 10:02 am

And why is because it would help me dealing with the kids and guiding them on paths that they may be steering off of. I want to be able to do best by them and knowing what kinds of decisions they are making in their own lives. Plus I can start dealing with things I may not approve of or expect before the time comes so when the situation becomes more public I am not taken offguard… Make sense??

I’d love to have Zafrina’s power, the ability to create illusions would help me out in so many ways!
I wouldn’t use it to lie to people though, just to “postpone” certain things, like doing my homework: “Ella, where’s your paper?” my teacher would say. “It’ right there on your desk, miss” I’d reply. :P

I’d want to be able to turn invisible and quiet at will. Wouldn’t that be great to avoid the annoying people?

  • By Rebecca, June 4, 2009 @ 11:53 am

I’d like to *not* be afraid of heights :-) while not exactly considered a super-power, I can’t even stand on a chair or the first rung of a step ladder without my legs shaking and that terrible feelign of falling! I would love to be able to jump up those trees lickety-split and not have heart failure as I look at the view from the top!

I would love to have Bella’s power to shield myself and others. How awesome would that be?

I would love the ability like Aro to know every thought that has gone through a person’s mind, ever. That would tell you so much about a person and whether they were an enemy or not, but I would like to do it selectively remotely, sort of a twist on Edward’s ability. Be able to do it remotely when I decide to. But I think this would only be a good thing if I was also compassionate, not necessarily as a gift but as a way of being. To be able to understand everything about a person, from a distance, but only when it was when you wanted would be totally cool.
