Book Talk: Book versus Movie

Now that the DVD is out and we’ve all had a chance to gorge ourselves on deleted scenes, extras and of course Edward, lets talk about which one you like better. The movie or the book.

Did you like the book better or the movie? Did you feel the characters were represented well in the movie? What would you change about the movie if you could? How are you liking the DVD? Do you have a favorite extra?

Jen’s Answer:

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a movie adaptation that was as good as the book. There is a majic to being able to build your own version of the world in your head. A director isn’t going to be able to perfectly recreate what each individual saw in their head so for me, I really don’t worry about whether the movie is as good as the book because I don’t expect it to be.

I did think the characters were well represented. I think the build of Bella and Edward’s relationship lacked some of the humor and subtlety of the book and that was disappointing to me. I loved Charlie and Jacob. And I liked Kristen’s version of Bella for the most part.

If I could change any thing it would be mostly visual…. make up, hair color, sparkle. My husband’s comment about the sparkle was “Oh, look. He’s wearing a cheap Photoshop filter.” Exactly.

I am loving the DVD. Hands down my favorite extra is the piano extra. I just love it.

So what do you think?

I loved them both, but liked the book better! I thought the movie was really well done, followed the book really well and was cast suberbly! I can put up with a little inperfections here and there to stare at Robward for 2 hours!!

P.S. I don’t have the piano extra! I got the Amazon 2 disk set, not the Target 3 disk set -SOB!

book hands down is better…but like you said, I don’t think a movie adaptation has ever been better than a book version of a story.

I wasn’t a fan of Bella’s portrayal, and I know for time, they cut out so much of her internal monologue, but I thought they could’ve kept some of it.
I think every other character was represented very well; Charlie surprised me. I thought BB did a great job, I’m not sure it was what I expected, but I liked it.

When I saw the movie in the theatre, I was really disappointed. The whole sparkle thing? seriously disappointed. The fake running in the woods and climbing of the trees? laughable.

But I can say, the more I watch it, it grows on me. I know it wasn’t supposed to be this big giant blockbuster; it gives it a little character. I AM though, eagerly awaiting better special effects in the subsequent movies; they know they can’t mess with the fans the second (and third, and fourth!) time around! :)

I liked the book better! The movie was great, but didn’t capture enough. I think it moved quickly, and for someone who read the book, is frustrating. I don’t know if anyone had any thoughts on the house choice, but I don’t like it in the movie. Reading books 1-4, I have my own picture of the inside of the home – and this modern brown house in the woods doesn’t suit my imagination. The home is their domain, I can’t see some of the things that happen in books 1-4 take place in that house. It seems small. Just my opin.

    Steph Reply:

I agree- that house wasn’t the one in my mind, they layout was wrong. And Bella’s room wasn’t changed in the book, like it was in the movie.

I definitely liked the book better. I love the movie as well, but I missed some of the details that couldn’t be represented. Like more Cullens. I also didn’t like the house. It wasn’t as I imagined it at all. And it wasn’t white. The baseball scene was the bomb though! I loved the piano extra too.

As far as other movies that might have been as good as the book, I have three:
    LOTR
    Fried Green Tomatoes
    Bridges of Madison Co.

Okay, so I just finished watching the movie… again. I’m still a huge fan of the book. It’s like there’s too many pieces missing in the movie. The main thing I found missing was the depth of Edward and Bella’s relationship.

Though I agree what others have said about Charlie and Jacob — they are much more likeable in the movie. And of course, the baseball scene.

I also have major beef with the Cullen’s house. NOT AT ALL what I envisioned and I don’t care for the house in the movie at all. Even Bella’s house and bedroom — same feelings. Oh, and the special effects… well, you could tell they had a limited budget.

I don’t expect the movie to be exactly the same as the book. I have high hopes that the future installments of the movies in this series will make up for what Twilight (the movie) is missing.

As for books that I LOVED as a movie, I have to say “The Notebook” by Nicolas Sparks really translated well into a movie.

I agree with most of what was said here. The biggest let down for me was the intensity of the relationship between Edward and Bella. The movie was very low budget and it showed. Maybe New Moon will be better! :)

I loved both versions. I watched the movie first then read the book. I like the actors they chose for the characters in the movie. Especially Robert Pattinson! I agree that the book was more detailed with Bella and Edward’s relationship. Both were great in thier own right. I did wish after reading the book that they had added a bit more to the movie. I highly recommend them both!

I of course loved the book far more than the movie. A couple of things really bothered me about the movie. For one (and don’t shoot me here) I did not care for how Edward was portrayed in the movie. The movie Edward felt over confident and cocky to me. I don’t get that from the book Edward.

I greatly disliked the “sparkle”. It didn’t work for me. I also pictured a different house than the one from the movie. The house I pictured was more old fashioned, much like the Cullens.

As for plot, I do feel the movie added as much as they could from the book. It would be impossible to ever know the “movie” Bella the way we do the book Bella as other actors have to speak.

I loved Jacob and Charlie from the movie and I never really cared for them in the books.
